The Windmill, conversion and extension, Stow-on-the-Wold
Restoration / Extension
Originally built in 1307 as a sawmill serving the Monks of Maugersbury, Millway Tower has undergone a sensitive transformation that reinterprets its medieval fabric for contemporary living. The project balances the preservation of historic character with the introduction of carefully considered modern interventions that respect the vernacular setting.
The architectural approach prioritised material authenticity and craftsmanship. Existing Cotswold stone walls were meticulously repaired and hand-finished, while new extensions adopt the same tonal palette to create a unified composition. Curved timber joinery elements and limestone floors reference traditional detailing but are executed with a refined contemporary expression, connecting past and present through material continuity and precision.
Internally, spaces are reconfigured around an open-plan living area that reveals the building’s original proportions and structure. Subtle contemporary insertions—such as bespoke metalwork and minimalist glazing—contrast and complement the texture of stone and timber. The interiors embrace a restrained material palette, allowing natural light and craftsmanship to define the atmosphere.
