Badger Bank, new house on Cleeve Hill, Cheltenham

New House

Nestled in the mid slopes of Cleeve Hill, this project reimagines an existing block of stables within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The design is intentionally landscape led, using the natural topography to minimise visibility and ensure the building sits comfortably within its rural setting.

The lower ground floor is set into the slope, with the upper volume offset to create a sheltered terrace. This staggered arrangement forms a strong horizontal emphasis and avoids the impression of a two storey dwelling.

Clad in timber boarding, the upper volume maintains a non domestic expression reminiscent of the original stable block. The drystone walling, blue slate, and oak draw directly from the local vernacular, helping the proposal blend naturally into its surroundings while creating an attractive sense of enclosure and screening.

Carefully composed and modest in presence, the scheme delivers a sensitive and unobtrusive addition to the Cotswold landscape.
