Garden Room extension to Sixteenth Century House
Restoration / Extension
The garden room has created a light-filled and inviting sitting/family space directly connected to the existing kitchen and dining areas. This addition now provides a strong visual link to the south gardens and courtyard, addressing the previous lack of connection from the eastern wing of the house.
The structure was carefully oriented to follow the eaves lines of the main house, which step up and down around the courtyard perimeter. Designed as a single-storey gabled form, the extension steps down in scale from the eastern wing and, due to the higher lawn levels, visually nestles into the southern landscaping. Its southern edge aligns with the southern gable of the drawing room for continuity.
Architecturally, the extension comprises two intersecting gabled roofs, reflecting the traditional Arts and Crafts character of the main house and the local Broadway vernacular. Steeply pitched roofs and asymmetric fenestration on the southern gable echo the corresponding elevation of the west wing, ensuring the new structure harmonizes with the existing property.
