Garden Room, to listed farmhouse, nr Bourton-on-the-Water

Restoration / Extension

This 17th– to 18th century Cotswold home has been sensitively reimagined with a contemporary orangery that strengthens its relationship to the surrounding landscape. Discreetly positioned behind the stone courtyard wall, the lightweight glazed structure introduces a bright, inviting space that opens directly onto the west facing lawns.

Designed to complement the character of the property, the orangery combines dark Crittall style glazing with chunky oak posts and lintels. Anchored to the garden wall, its modest flat roof is fully concealed to preserve the integrity of the historic roofscape.

New window and door casements, conservation grade rooflights, and a reconfigured entrance subtly refine the exterior while significantly enhancing natural light. Internally, a reordered layout creates a clearer, more intuitive flow between rooms. The existing garage is also converted to provide additional accommodation, linked to the main house by a partially glazed walkway.

The result is a thoughtfully considered addition that respects the home’s heritage while enhancing modern everyday living. The project’s sensitive approach has been recognised with a feature in RIBAJ.
