Folly Farm, conversion of barn (and former circus headquarters), Gloucestershire
Barn Conversion
Formerly Giffords Circus headquarters and training ground, this 2.5 acre site comprised of an eclectic mix of buildings. Tyack architects were appointed to convert the principal steel framed building and connect it to the existing dwelling to create a family home.
The facades of the barn were reconfigured by introducing stone cladding and glazed screens recessed behind Cotswold stone columns, as well as a lightweight balcony offering views over the pond and landscape beyond. Internally, the barn has been adapted to accommodate a spacious living and dining area, and a first floor has been inserted to provide bedrooms.
Connecting to the main barn via a simple glazed link, a single-storey linear extension positioned perpendicular to the main building serves as a bedroom wing, whilst also creating a semi-enclosed courtyard area. The wider site had been softened by demolishing unsightly, redundant structures and returning large areas of hardstanding to grass, overall creating unique a family home.
