The two southern bays of the larger five-bay threshing barn had previously suffered from a rudimentary conversion in the late 19th century, followed in the 1960’s by a crude domestic extension to its southern gable.  The removal of the unsympathetic two-storey extension and careful insertion of a new linking element enabled the reinstated historic structures to be connected.  The simplicity of the linking lean-to structure echoes the form of a previously removed milking parlour, creating both the visual separation demanded from the conservation officer and the defining intermediate space that ties the two buildings together.  Critical to the success of the development was the connection at first floor provided by re-using the existing granary door tucked beneath the eaves.
